First things first… what is a hank?
A hank of seed beads is simply a collection of beads that have already been temporarily strung onto threads.
Hanks are particularly common with Czech seed beads.
Why do people love buying seed beads on hanks?
They’re already strung
This is the big one.
If your project involves transferring lots of beads onto thread, wire or another material, having them already lined up can make life considerably easier.
Instead of picking up every tiny bead individually, you can work along the strand.
For some projects, that’s a serious time-saver.
But hanks aren’t perfect…
As much as we love them, there are a few things worth knowing.
You still have to remove the beads from the thread
The thread holding a hank together is generally there for storage and selling — it’s not the thread you’ll use for your finished project.
Depending on what you’re making, you’ll need to carefully transfer or remove the beads before using them.
Hanks can tangle
If you untie everything at once or throw several open hanks into your bead box together, those beautifully organised strands can quickly become a colourful little knot.
